When I saw Ocean's Twelve and Adele sparkling of gold tones in the background, I thought that the producers of the film really did their home work and added the most expensive oil painting known to man to the background of the exuberant Terry Benedict. However, in Ocean's Thirteen, Adele was still hanging in the background, but the painting got stripped down from all it's gold and had only silver tones…

Ocean's Eleven is one of many motion pictures that have used art to create a sense of style and luxury in their scenes. Another hit movie of recent that had featured famous and extravagant artworks is "I am Legend" staring Will Smith. Here the art played a different role, with the world civilization basically annihilated by a deadly virus, Will Smith, the only living human being left in New York City, hangs in his living room the famous Van Gogh Starry Night oil painting, probably taken from the Museum of Modern Art on Fifth Avenue.

It's cool to see that the producers of this film identified that even if you were the last human being on the face of the earth, you'd still like to have Van Gogh's, Monet's and Picasso's hanging on your Walls.

The Last Supper is a fifteenth century mural painting, worked for his patron Duke Ludovico Sforza and for his duchess Beatrice d' Este. The painting represents a scene of the last supper of Jesus Christ during his final days, when Jesus announced that one of his twelve disciples would be disloyal to him. This painting measures about 460 � 880 centimeters or 15 feet � 29 feet and the painting can be found at the back halls of the dining hall at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. Leonardo painted this on a dry wall rather than on a wet plaster, so it is not a true fresco. As fresco can't be modified as the artist works, he instead wanted to seal the wall with layers of gesso, pitch and mastic. The paint was preserved with tempera, as it is one of the methods used, however the piece didn't withstand well; within many years of completion it already began to show signs of deterioration.

In his lifetime, Leonardo da Vinci painted portraits of three women, and they all have a wistfulness and mystery surrounding them. This magical quality is very appealing in 'Cecilia Gallarani' (1490) and is at its provoking best in 'Ginevra de` Benci' (1478-1480). All these three paintings are haunting, and almost spiritual in their appeal - a technique very Leonardo da Vinci like.

It was in 1482, that Leonardo moved to Milan and offered his services as a military engineer, sculptor, and painter to the ruler Ludovico Sforza, who gladly accepted the services and financed the artist a workshop. Leonardo da Vinci spent 18 years in the service of Ludovico. 'The Virgin of the Rocks' (1482-1486) was painted by Leonardo da Vinci for the Church of S. Francesco Grande in 1483.

It was during the late 1480s that Leonardo da Vinci began to experiment on a wide range of scientific studies that included subjects such as botany, medicine, anatomy, architecture, geography and many others. He left behind several drawings and sketches of his experiments. Moreover, he worked on the 'Treatise on Painting', a manual of instruction (theoretical and practical) for painters through much of his adult life.

In 1499, da Vinci headed to Mantua and then Venice. In 1500, he came back to Florence and painted the 'Virgin and Child with St. Anne' (1502-1516). In 1516, Leonardo da Vinci was appointed "the first painter, engineer and architect of the King", Francis I of France. He died in Cloux, France on 2 May 1519. He rests in peace in the Church of St. Florentine in Amboise.

Leonardo da Vinci's work is unique for his treatment of hair that has an angelic quality, and the lack of rigidity of contour in his forms. His use of perspective to add depth to his frescos and pictures is remarkable for the method of execution.

Oil Paintings of the Seashore

As with most products, there is usually a large selection to choose from and invariably you are unsure of quite where to start, and this is especially the case when choosing an oil painting.

Think of practically any object under the sun and there will be an oil painting of it somewhere.

You can even get an oil painting of an oil painting; some artists will reproduce an oil painting of an old master. That's certainly a much cheaper option than buying an original!

I've actually had quite a few reproduced like this, including several old masters by famous artists that I particularly liked and one or two of paintings by not so famous artists. In fact, I'm building up quite a collection and sometimes the biggest problem is finding somewhere to hang them all!

You can even have your favourite photograph transformed into oil painting form and I have had a number of these converted to oil painting form as well. They look so much better than a photograph and also make the ideal gift.

Various Chinese artists will reproduce oil paintings and most of the paintings are actually very good. Original Chinese oil paintings though can always be detected by anyone with the slightest bit of experience. They tend to exaggerate the colours for some reason, maybe they think this looks more attractive, but the result is that you end up with colours that just should not be there. It is easy to see what I mean if you study one or two.

Sometimes the result can be almost comical. I remember an ostentatious friend of mine showing off an oil painting he had recently bought (which he probably paid a fortune for) but after a couple of seconds admiring it I turned round and told him it was Chinese. Well, I won't go into the details of the reply!

However, from the huge selection of themes available, my favourite will always be those based on the seashore.

The seashore depicts tranquility and calm, a naturalness unaffected by the effects of time. Various artists over the years have reproduced this in their paintings. Ivan Aivazovsky, the 19th century Russian artist, was one to note, with several excellent paintings including the appropriately named 'Seashore', 'Seashore.Calm' and 'Sunset at sea', all painted in the 1840's.

Aivazovsky actually created several thousand oil paintings in his lifetime and many can be seen in Aivazovsky Hall at the State Russian Museum, St Petersburg, Russia.

Hardly the same standard or quality as Aivazovsky, but still extremely desirable, is the painting 'Dunes' by the 1920's German artist Horst Alter. With his mastery of light it is truly one of my favourites. Other artists to note include Shchedrin as well as Adamson, the artist infamous for his oil painting of the seashore.

Many other great artists have included the seashore theme in their works. Tastes obviously vary among different people and what one person will enthuse over, another's reaction may be luke warm.

Time and research are the keys to locating an oil painting that one will admire for a lifetime. Never buy in a hurry just for the sake of buying, or simply to fill that empty space on the wall. An oil painting should be treasured, as well as admired.

I've made substantial use of the internet to locate such an example and indeed I've located many fine examples over the years.

Whilst an oil painting can represent an excellent investment if chosen carefully, if I've seen one that I particularly like but can't quite afford, I've cheated and commissioned an artist to create a replica and nobody except an expert would know the difference!
